Renegade Humor (2012)

While exhibits William T. Wiley’s characteristic humor, it also gravely refers to the terrorist attacks that occurred in New York on September 11, 2001. An inscription at the top of the painting reads: “September 11, the day the earth stood still and went faster. America under attack.” Below the writing, Wiley painted the smoldering ruins of the World Trade Center. Like most of Wiley’s work, overflows with a bustling energy that comes from layers of obsessive scrawls and scribbles saturating the raw areas of the canvas. Planetary symbols and cosmic signs abound, as well as the yin-yang, which represents idealized balance in the universe. At the center of the painting is the outline of a large mountain goat, a symbol of practical wisdom and the emblem of a man who wins victories through diplomatic means rather than by force.
